Mastering the Triple Captain chip is essential for any FPL manager looking to get ahead in Fantasy Premier League life.
This powerful chip allows you to triple your captain’s points for one gameweek, potentially leading to huge point boosts during double gameweeks or favorable matchups.
In this guide, we’ll explain the FPL Triple Captain rules, how to activate it, and share expert tips on when to use it for maximum impact.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, understanding how and when to use the Triple Captain chip can make a significant difference to your Fantasy Premier League performance.
But first…
Captaincy is easily my least favourite part about Fantasy Premier League.
There are several big things I’d change about the game, if I was made FPL King (which I should be), but that would be first on my list. The Fantasy Premier League triple captain, however… that’s something I can get behind.
Captaincy shouldn’t be a weekly thing. It’s both too powerful, and too random. The FPL triple captain is even more powerful, but – for reasons we’ll soon explore – it’s less random. Most importantly, you can only press this particular big red button twice per season.
Read on, my fellow FPL fan, to learn everything you need to know about this valuable tool.
You’ll get the Fantasy Premier League triple captain rules explained in full, find answers to all of your biggest questions, and even get some top FPL triple captain tips on making the most of this opportunity. What more could you possibly ask for?*
(*”Err, someone who knows what they’re talking about?”. Yes, har har, it was a rhetorical question)

As you may (and probably do) already know, captaincy is a big part of FPL.
Every single gameweek, you can choose one player on your team to be your captain. That player’s points – just for that gameweek – will be doubled. If you captain Haaland, and he scores 10 normal points, you’ll get 20 points instead.
The meaning of Fantasy Premier League triple captain is pretty self-explanatory.
Instead of being doubled, the points from your FPL captain that gameweek will be tripled instead. In this case, therefore, Haaland’s output of 10 points would actually get you 30 points.
That all sounds pretty amazing, right? Well, slow down there my friend – there’s a catch.
Triple captaincy is an FPL ‘chip’, just like the Free Hit and Bench Boost. That means it can only be used twice in the entire FPL season (as opposed to once per season, which was the rule before 2025).
As such, you need to be extremely selective about when you use your FPL triple captain, and not just spontaneously/drunkenly triple captain a player purely because you feel like it (both of which I have definitely never, ever done).
Assuming you read the previous section – which, come on, you really should have, it’s less than 200 words – you already know the basics about what the triple captain is, and how it works.
To ensure there’s no room for mistakes or misinterpretation, however, let’s look at the FPL triple captain rules properly:
There are two particular rules to pay attention to here.
The first is that you can cancel your triple captain if you want to. After activating it on the Pick Team screen (see below), you can still change your mind, go back to that screen, and call the whole thing off. Obviously though, you must do so before the gameweek deadline.
The second is that the triple captaincy will be transferred to your vice-captain if your first captain doesn’t play. I would hope that you set your vice-captain every week anyway, like all conscientious FPL players. Make absolutely sure that you’ve done so, however, on the week you play your triple captain.
FPL is a pretty user-friendly game, for the most part, even if transfers can be a bit finicky. I’m delighted to say it could hardly be easier to activate this particular chip, with these being the few steps you must take to play your FPL triple captain:
Remember that – even after you’ve done all that – you’re not fully committed. If you wake up in a cold sweat the next morning, panicking that you made the wrong choice, just head back to the Pick Team tab and cancel the triple captaincy.
I’ve basically included this section because I see this question (Why is my FPL triple captain unavailable?’) cropping up online with some frequency. Unfortunately, the most likely answer is… it’s your own fault!
Not to be condescending – heaven forbid – but the probable explanation in this case is that you used your triple captain chip already (and remember, you only get two). If you activated it, then tried to back out, perhaps you didn’t cancel it properly.
The only other real possibility is that you already played a chip that gameweek (such as your free hit). Since you can only activate one chip per week, that’d make FPL give you a big, fat ‘NO!’ when you tried to play your triple captain too. Rules are rules, you know.

Obviously, there’s no hard and fast answer to this question. There are a couple of nice little FPL tips I can give you, however, to help you pick the best FPL triple captain in any given season.
Firstly, you definitely want to pick someone who’s on a double gameweek. Even if the best player in the league has the most mouthwatering fixture in a single gameweek, you must resist. The points ceiling for two fixtures instead of one is simply so much higher.
Secondly, you preferably want a midfielder. I know, it’s tempting to take whoever the sexy, in-form striker is, or whoever’s leading the scoring charts at the time. The fact is, however, that midfielders outscore forwards in general, for the reasons I explained here. Obviously, you’re not picking a Rodri over a Haaland. But if you’re wondering who you’re going to FPL triple captain this week, and the players are more or less equal, go for the midfielder.
“But Joe,” you say. “You already gave us such amazing FPL triple captain tips in the last section!”
I know, I know. It’s crazy, really. But what can I say – I’m just a generous guy.
Playing your Fantasy football Premier League triple captain is part art, part science. There are certainly hard and fast rules I would always obey, like picking someone on a double gameweek. After that, however, a huge amount of it comes down to specifics and context.
I’m not going to leave it with that wishy-washy answer, though. Oh no. Here are some concrete FPL triple captain tips – some real golden nuggets of wisdom – to help you out.
If I could make you get a tattoo with one piece of FPL advice, it’d be this. Staying patient is incredibly important in general in FPL. That’s easier said than done if you’re constantly being bombarded with panicky posts on Twitter and Reddit, but ignoring that noise and sticking to a strategy/your own instincts is more relaxing, fun, and – usually – successful.
Patience is very important for playing your Fantasy Premier League triple captain too.
Firstly, the double gameweeks usually come later in the season anyway, when the European knockout rounds begin. You almost always want to hold your second triple captain (and your second free hit) until then.
Secondly, you need to wait for the right fixtures. A double gameweek against two tough defences probably still won’t result in many points, even if they’re being tripled.
Thirdly, you need to be patient within the context of your own league. Don’t just drop your triple captain earlier than you should, simply because your mates/moral enemies are doing it. Nor should you drop it in a panic just because you’re trailing after 10, 15, even 20 gameweeks. Wait, wait, and wait some more until the actual opportune moment. It doesn’t matter who’s ahead halfway through the season – it’s about who’s ahead after 38 gameweeks.
Your position in your own mini-league shouldn’t really affect when you play your FPL triple captain. It can, however, affect who you choose to pick.
As a general rule of thumb in FPL, if you’re leading your league, or your OR is nice and high, you should play things safe and protect what you’ve got. It might sound boring, but just try to pick the same guys all the other top players have, which you can judge based on Effective Ownership (explained by yours truly here). If you’re chasing, however, you have to be more aggressive and take riskier, differential picks.
The same applies to your FPL triple captain. If you’re cruising, just pick someone with a high floor (and the potential for a good haul too, of course). If you’re trailing, go for someone with a higher ceiling instead. Three or four goals across a double gameweek – from an explosive, streaky, but in-form striker, for example – can give you an enormous, season-changing boost.
You’re giving yourself a massive handicap if you try and play Fantasy Premier League in a bubble. I generally don’t endorse endlessly browning FPL Twitter or Reddit, simply because the vast majority of people on there have no idea what they’re talking about. I certainly don’t mind paying attention to the proven players, however, or those who’ve been running podcasts or websites for a while.
Before you play your triple captain specifically, I’d absolutely recommend doing some (high quality) research. Basically, see what the top players are doing, and consider doing the same. Don’t blindly copy it, because these players also make mistakes all the time, but do at least get ideas as to what your options are for the best time to play your wildcard.
The FPL triple captain is certainly a potent weapon. If used correctly, it can see you get a big point swing, and have a major impact on both your OR and mini-league success.
That being said… don’t stress too much about it. If you mess up your triple captain chips, it’s definitely not the end of the world. The points you miss out on in those two, specific instances can easily be made up by smart play in the other 36 gameweeks of the season.
At the very least, after reading this article, I’d hope you’ve had the Fantasy Premier League triple captain rules explained to you enough that you won’t mess up too badly. There’s some encouragement for you!
