FPL Gameweek 17 - Transfer Tips and Captaincy

Welcome to our Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 17 transfer tips! With the EFL Cup midweek games finished, there’s plenty to consider as we navigate player rotations, injuries, and the impact of upcoming fixtures.

Let’s dive into the key transfers in and out that you should be keeping an eye on!

Should I Buy?

If you are asking the question, should I buy this player? Then this section is for you.

Harry Wilson – No. Look, I get why 800,000 managers are piling in on him after that big 16-pointer. But he’s basically overperforming his underlying stats, he’s not locked in for 90 minutes most of the time and Fulham’s attack is not good.

Ekitike – Yeah. Forwards are a nightmare right now, so I can see the appeal. He’s got back-to-back braces and Liverpool’s fixtures are juicy. It’s a high-upside punt and honestly, I’m not against it. He could bang in a couple more goals in the next few.

Foden – Maybe. If you’ve been here before, you know I, James, am not a fan of the Pep Roulette and have no interest in Foden. Of course, he continues to make me look like an idiot as he continues to massively overperform his xG (0.13 in the last game), I still don’t think that’s sustainable. I’m not getting him, but I know plenty will. Just know the rotation could sting you eventually.

Bruno Fernandes – Yes. Nailed, 90 minutes, super important. Doesn’t matter if he’s playing deeper, he’s Bruno. Good fixtures coming up and he’ll pop off unpredictably. Just get him if you can and hold him forever,

Rogers: No. Overperforming last year and overperforming again this year – I’m still not convinced. He’s fine for a good fixture or two, but Villa’s attack isn’t amazing. I’d pass.

Chalobah – Maybe Chelsea defense is okay, not elite. He’s fine as a long-term hold, but I’d rather have Cucurella if you want a Chelsea defender because his positioning is crazy attacking. Chalobah’s not a bad pick, but not a priority this week with the Newcastle fixture.

Guehi – Yes. I’m skeptical that his attacking prowess continues, but Palace defense is solid and he’s relatively cheap. Decent pick.

Semenyo – Maybe. Fine as a super short-term pick but I will be selling him in two weeks time so I don’t like using two transfers.

Thiago – Yes. Good pick, on pens, decent open play goals, but Brentford are bad away from home. Play him selectively.

Cherki – No. Worse than Foden for rotation. No thanks.

Calvert-Lewin – No. Four goals recently doesn’t change the way I think about him. In previous years he threw chances away for fun.

Saka – Yes. I love him, nailed, Arsenal’s main guy. Fixtures aren’t as nice as City’s, but he’ll get you points.

Nico O’Reilly: if you want a City asset, he’s probably a solid shout. Seems nailed, especially with Ait-Nouri going to AFCON. Ruben and Gvardiol also options.

Rice – Yes. Reliable for consistent points, even if he won’t explode. Good for the price.

Bruno Guimarães – No. He barely gets defcons, returns sporadically and is on four yellows.

Palmer  – No. He is an interesting gamble. He hasn’t played 90 yet, so I’d hold off until we see more minutes.

Should I Sell?

If you are asking the question, should I sell this player? Then this section is for you.

Mbeumo, Ndiaye – Yes. They have gone to AFCON.

Woltemade – Maybe. He just scored an own goal, and I get it – he hasn’t been that prolific. But honestly, there aren’t a lot of great striker options at that price. If you’ve got him, holding him through the next couple of fixtures isn’t the worst idea. Chelsea this week is rough, but after that, it gets better.

Eze – Yes. He’s just not nailed, and with Odegaard and the wingers fit, he’s not getting the minutes.

João Pedro –  Yes. He’s been bad for a while, and we were all fooled into buying him at some point. Time to move on.

Doku, Burn, Gakpo – Yes. Injured.

Van Der Ven – Yes. Spurs defence isn’t great and his ludicrous attacking displays are a thing of the past.

Grealish, Dewsbury Hall – Maybe. The fixtures are really good so its frustrating if you own them. Wait for more information but you might be forced to sell.

Welbeck – Yes. Not getting minutes.

Bruno Guimarães – Maybe. Fine to sell but good fixtures and probably the only nailed option in that attack.

Semenyo – No. Are you crazy? Burnley at home is THE BEST FIXTURE IN THE LEAGUE!

Rice – No. not sure why you’d sell him unless you’re funding a big move. He’s just ticking along.

Enzo Fernández – Yes. He is a good sell, especially if Cole Palmer is back (and therefore on pens)

Captaincy Corner

Don’t get fancy. Just captain Haaland.

If your name is FPL General then maybe think about Thiago or Semenyo – they’re fun picks.

That’s It.

Don’t yell at me. It’s christmas.
