Team by Team Analysis of FPL Double Gameweek 35 & 37

In this section we will go team by team looking for viable fantasy options for each team that doubles. A viable option will be someone that we think has a good chance of delivering a good number of points for their cost.

The Double Doublers

Chelsea

PositionsViable Options
GKPetrovic
DEFGusto
MIDPalmer
FWDJackson

Well, firstly, Palmer has to be the first name on your team sheet. At the time of writing, news is circulating about him being ill. But, I assume he will be fit by the time the first double comes around. He, for me, is the logical captaincy pick in FPL double gameweek 35. The fixtures look difficult on paper but all defences suck this year and Spurs and Villa are pretty middle of the road in comparison to the rest of the league.

Jackson is the only other option in the Chelsea attack worth considering. Alongside Darwin, this guy is one of the most frustrating players to own in FPL. But, he is 15th in the xGI tables for outfield players. He consistently underperforms his xGI but he is getting the opportunities and there is a chance he puts them all away. I wan that high upside.

Chelsea technically have one of the better defences in the league according to xGC but they, like all defences besides Arsenal this year, suck. I’d only really consider the goalkeeper Petrovic or Gusto because they are both cheap. Goalkeepers tend to not have high ceilings anyway so its fine. Gusto has a small chance of an attacking return too. The only problem is that he might be injured… wait and see.

Spurs

PositionsViable Options
GKVicario
DEFPorro, Van de Ven
MIDSon, Maddison, Johnson
FWDWerner

If Palmer is the first name on your team sheet, then Son is the second. Like the rest of the Spurs team, Son hasn’t been looking great recently. But. We trust the pedigree here. Son has consistently been one of the top scorers in FPL and is the fourth highest scoring midfielder in FPL this season at the time of writing.

The rest of the attacking assets are more difficult to deal with. Richarlison is injured but could be back by the weekend. That probably doesn’t make him a great pick because we wouldn’t expect him to play 180 mins in a week after injury. But more importantly, it makes it more difficult to pick Werner or Johnson as they fight out for the remaining two spots of three after Son takes his.

I don’t mind Werner or Johnson, they are both okay assets and offer good value. But because of the lack of clarity of starts, I prefer Maddison. Maddo hasn’t been in great form and has been getting subbed off early but I think that is a consequence of an injury he picked up. At the end of the day this guy has low double digits ceiling in a single game and I want that upside.

In defence, Vicario is fine but feels a bit expensive for my tastes. Porro is the guy we all want because of his attacking potential. On the other hand, he is very expensive and it’s hard to pick him over a City asset, especially as he is carrying a knock. Sadly, Udogie is injured which leaves only Van de Ven as an option and only because he is only 4.4.

Triple up on Double Doublers?

Chelsea and Spurs double in FPL gameweek 35 and 37 which makes them logical picks on your wildcard.

My first instinct is to triple up on them. This is made difficult by the fact their defences suck and I am tempted to just ignore their defences and double up on Arsenal defence for 35, regardless of the doubles.

I think you want as many of their attacking assets as possible. So, if you do triple up, look at the midfielders and attackers and maybe take one or two defenders out of a possible six.

The FPL Gameweek 37 Doublers

Newcastle

PositionsViable Options
GKDubravka
DEFTrippier, Krafth, Burn, Schar
MIDGordon
FWDIsak

Newcastle have been such a weird team this year. Their defence in particular was incredible at the start of the season, dreadful in the middle and seemingly good again now. So, in FPL gameweek 35 wildcard I like Dubravka, Trippier, Krafth, Burn and Schar. Dubravka and Trippier are the riskier two. We don’t know when Pope will be fit (who would just take Dubravka’s spot if fit) and we don’t know when Trippier will return to fitness either. Krafth is the cheap guy with minimal attacking potential Burn has slightly higher ceiling. Schar just occasionally scores a banger but I’m not sure that is worth 0.5 more than Burn.

In midfield, there is only Gordon. I don’t need to tell you about this guy. Super cheap and been great when fit. In attack, Isak is fourth in xGI per 90 for outfield players this year. Annoyingly, Wilson is close to fitness and could take some minutes away from him but I love the guy and I want him.

Outside of the doubles, Newcastle have the best fixtures as they play Sheff Utd (home), Burnley (away) and Brentford (away) in 35, 36, and 38. I think that, plus the price points, makes a triple up very viable.

Man City

PositionsViable Options
GKEderson
DEFDias, Gvardiol
MIDFoden, De Bruyne
FWDHaaland

Statistically the second best defence in the league but they only have nine clean sheets. I think that is an opportunity. You can get Ederson who is nailed at goalkeeper and so few people will think to do the same because of the price and lack of clean sheets. Admittedly, picking a defender is way harder because we never know who is nailed in defence. I think Dias is most likely to be nailed but I like Gvardiol because you only pay 4.9 for him.

In the midfield, I think Foden is the best pick. We know he can haul and he has been pretty nailed most of the season. De Bruyne can haul but we also know that he cannot play 180 mins in one week so I am not a huge fan but would certainly not begrudge you buying him.

As for forwards. Just get Haaland.

Man United

PositionsViable Options
GKOnana
DEFMaguire
MIDFernandes, Garnacho
FWDHojlund

It’s a weird day when I am looking at Man United defensive assets. But, the fixtures in and around the FPL double gameweek 37 make it worth considering for your wildcard. Onana is expensive but fine as a player and the 5th highest scoring keeper in the game. United have been lucky to have eight clean sheets on the year but this guys is part of the reason they have overperformed their xGC.

I also like Maguire. Old slabhead has taken a lot of abuse (including just now) but he is so cheap this year and he has that slabhead which makes him an attacking threat for set pieces.

Fernandes remains an excellent player in a bad team and we know his pedigree which seems to be showing through in his recent form. Garnacho is mega cheap, seems nailed and is their second best asset.

Hojlund is fine. Not my fave but he’s had spells of playing well this year.

Brighton

PositionsViable Options

DEF

Just don’t bother. They’re done. So many injuries and nothing to play for. Even with all the injuries, their best player Fati doesn’t get minutes. Fuck de Zerbi.

My First Wildcard Draft

With thanks to FPL.team, my first draft looks like this:

I have triple Spurs and triple Chelsea in this draft but could have Gordon instead of Johnson for the excellent Sheff Utd fixture and then I don’t use a transfer in 36 for him. I’d be fine with that.

Gabriel and Salah stay in my team regardless of their doubles. I like the idea of holding on to these two because they are such good assets and I think others won’t have them. I don’t have a plan for them but, in theory, I can move either of them (or both) to doublers in 37. Regardless, I am happy to play them on my bench boost.

Otherwise, you can just read above for all the reasons I have these guys.

Questions & Answers

What About Players That Don’t Double

You will have two free transfers between now and 37. You don’t really want to book in transfers now, in case things go wrong. But, in theory, you can keep an Arsenal defender or someone else pretty reliable and you still have time to sell them. I would expect a lot of -4s in gameweek 37.

I Don’t Have My Wildcard. Can I Take a Hit in FPL Double Gameweek 35?

Yes.

Try to limit it as much as possible but a -4 is fine. Mainly because loads of other managers will be doing this too.

That’s It

That’s all for this FPL double gameweek 35 special. We will look to do a normal preview later in the week.
