We are staring down the barrel of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Double Gameweek 37.

Instead of doing the normal, we are doing an updated version of our wildcard preview looking at the viable options from teams that double in 37. We will then look at viable single gameweek players too. But, before that, let’s look at the top talking points ahead of FPL gameweek 37.

Top Talking Points

Think Short-Term & Differential

Most of the season, FPL nerds like myself tell you to think long-term and pick the safe picks. But now, you can safely ignore this advice.

Think short-term and differential. Thinking short-term means you should focus your transfers on players with good gameweeks now. If they have good gameweeks later too, that’s great, but its not super important.

Thinking differential means you should look at your rivals and do something different to them to give you an edge (unless your teams are super different already, maybe then just cover your arse). So, for example, if your opponent has Vicario, Porro and Son and you have Porro and Son then go for Maddison or Richarlison as your third Spurs asset. Thinking differentially doesn’t mean you have to go and buy a crap guy with less than 1% ownership.

Fernandes & Son – Careful Not To Overreact

Bruno was injured and United looked shit. Spurs were dreadful and Son was lucky to get a goal.

But, that doesn’t mean I think you should sell them if you own them. In fact, I still think they are perfectly legitimate targets to buy. In terms of xGI this year, Bruno is 9th and Son is 11th of all outfield players. Man United have been terrible all year and Bruno has been delivering. Son has consistently outperformed his xG for the entirety of his career – he is an excellent finisher.

I would probably take Foden over both of these two. This is based on the fact that City are better than Spurs or United. But, I would take double Bruno or double Son over pretty much every other midfielder in the game.

Team by Team Analysis of FPL Double Gameweek 37

In this section we will go team by team looking for viable fantasy options for each team that doubles. A viable option will be someone that we think has a good chance of delivering a good number of points for their cost.

Spurs

PositionsViable Options
GKVicario
DEFPorro, Van de Ven
MIDSon, Maddison
FWDRicharlison.

I have covered Son above in the ‘don’t overreact’ section but just to reiterate that he is class. We trust the pedigree here. Son has consistently been one of the top scorers in FPL and is the fifth highest scoring midfielder in FPL this season at the time of writing.

The rest of the attacking assets are more difficult to deal with. Richarlison is back from injury but only came off the bench against Liverpool. I am not sure we can expect him to play 180 mins. That also makes it difficult to pick Werner or Johnson who have been relegated off this list since the wildcard preview.

Frankly, I still prefer Maddison. Maddo hasn’t been in great form and has been getting subbed off early but I think that is a consequence of an injury he picked up. At the end of the day this guy has low double digits ceiling in a single game and I want that upside.

In defence, Vicario is fine but feels a bit expensive for my tastes. Porro is the guy we all want because of his attacking potential. On the other hand, he is very expensive and it’s hard to pick him over a City asset. Sadly, Udogie is injured which leaves only Van de Ven as an option and only because he is only 4.4.

Newcastle

PositionsViable Options
GKDubravka
DEFBurn
MIDGordon
FWDIsak, Wilson

Newcastle have been such a weird team this year. Their defence in particular was incredible at the start of the season, dreadful in the middle and seemingly good again now. So, in FPL gameweek 37, I like Dubravka, and Burn. We don’t know when Pope will be fit (who would just take Dubravka’s spot if fit). Trippier didn’t make the squad this weekend so I don’t think he will start either game.

In midfield, there is only Gordon. I don’t need to tell you about this guy. Super cheap and been great when fit. In attack, Isak is fourth in xGI per 90 for outfield players this year. Annoyingly for me, Wilson is fit and could take some minutes away from him. Wilson himself might be an interesting pick as well but I’d rather take Isak.

Chelsea

PositionsViable Options
GKPetrovic
DEFCucurella
MIDPalmer
FWDJackson

If you don’t have Palmer by now then you’re crazy

Jackson is the only other option in the Chelsea attack worth considering. Alongside Darwin, this guy is one of the most frustrating players to own in FPL. But, he is 12th in the xGI tables for outfield players. He consistently underperforms his xGI but he is getting the opportunities and there is a chance he puts them all away. I want that high upside that he showed this week.

Chelsea technically have one of the better defences in the league according to xGC but they, like all defences besides Arsenal this year, suck. I’d only really consider the Goalkeeper Petrovic because he is cheap. Goalkeepers tend to not have high ceilings anyway so its fine. With Gusto injured, I can only see Cucurella as an option at Chelsea but he isn’t really an option because both he and they are bad. But, if you’re desperate, there he is… Personally, I would rather have a single gameweek.

Man City

PositionsViable Options
GKEderson
DEFDias, Gvardiol
MIDFoden, De Bruyne
FWDHaaland

Statistically the second best defence in the league but they only have nine clean sheets. That’s an opportunity. Ederson is fit again and nailed at goalkeeper. Admittedly, picking a defender is way harder because we never know who is nailed in defence. I shouted Gvardiol because you only pay 4.9 for him in our wildcard preview. Of course, I bought Ederson instead. But Gvardiol has been smashing it… Sigh… FPL eh?

In the midfield, I think Foden is the best pick. We know he can haul and he has been pretty nailed most of the season. De Bruyne can haul but we also know that he cannot play 180 mins in one week so I am not a huge fan but would certainly not begrudge you buying him.

As for forwards. Just get Haaland.

Man United

PositionsViable Options
GKOnana
DEFDalot
MIDFernandes, Garnacho
FWDHojlund

It’s a weird day when I am looking at Man United defensive assets. But, they double so…

They have genuinely one of the worst defences in the league but Dalot has a small attacking threat. So, he is your guy I guess. I’m not saying I want him or like him but he’s all that is left.

Onana is expensive but fine as a player and the 5th highest scoring keeper in the game. United have been lucky to have eight clean sheets on the year but this guys is part of the reason they have overperformed their xGC.

Fernandes remains an excellent player in a bad team and we know his pedigree which seems to be showing through in his recent form. Garnacho is mega cheap, seems nailed and is their second best asset.

Hojlund is fine. Not my fave but he’s had spells of playing well this year.

Brighton

PositionsViable Options
GK
DEF
MID
FWD

Just don’t bother. They’re done. So many injuries and nothing to play for. They will play waaay too open and both Chelsea and Newcastle will score against them. Their defence is worth nothing.

The Non-Doublers

Arsenal play Man United away and Everton at home after that. The first is an excellent attacking fixture and the second is an excellent defensive one. Arsenal have the best defence in the league so Gabriel and Saliba are definitely options. Likewise, Saka and Havertz good attacking options.

Crystal Palace play Wolves away and Villa at home after that. Palace’s recent form is hard to deny (even though I tried to deny Mateta a bit as an asset a couple of weeks ago). However, all their big results under Glasner have come at home. So, we aren’t entirely sure if they are as good away from home. Regardless, Wolves are among the worst defences and worst attacks in the league so Eze, Olise, Mateta, Munoz are all viable shouts.

Liverpool play Villa away and then Wolves at home. Villa seem to have sorted out their defensive woes recently so I don’t think that’s an easy fixture. But, as this week proved, never rule out Mo Salah. There is a chance he isn’t at Liverpool next year and if you want one last hurrah from the Egyptian king for nostalgia reasons I won’t try to convince you otherwise.

Finally, Everton play the worst team in the league at home this week – Sheffield United. Pickford and Branthwaite are very viable single gameweekers. Sheffield United have completely given up on trying to defend and are now super attacking so there is a risk Everton lose their clean sheet but its still a good risk.

Captaincy Corner

A lot of good options for FPL Gameweek 37.

Haaland, Isak, Palmer are probably my top three. I don’t mind Son or even Bruno but I think they carry more risk than the top three.

I think Haaland is the number one pick. We have seen last week what he is capable of. Spurs defence is dreadful and Fulham’s isn’t much better.

I am supremely tempted with Isak though. Brighton are so open that it could be a cricket score and Man United looked dreadful with their makeshift back line against Palace.

James’ Moves

I captained Palmer over Haaland last week as I tried to overtake my mini league opponent’s eight point lead… Yeah. You can see how well that went. I am now 33 points behind him. No regrets really. I kind of needed to take a risk now (before cups came into play) and I was right that Chelsea were gonna smash West Ham I just didn’t get the goals from Palmer.

I have 12 doublers this week and he only has 7. There is a chance my bench boost drags that score difference down but I think that’s probably an insurmountable lead with only two weeks to go. It is disappointing as I have won this league three years in a row.

Fortunately, I still have something to play for. I am 11 points off second in the Full 90 FPL Public League and 15 points ahead of Joe in third. And, I am in two semi-finals (cup and head to head playoffs) so I still have something to play for.

As I said above, I am pretty well set up for the double gameweek with 12 doublers. It’s just Maguire injury and B. Fernandes question marks that are having to make me think.

As for Maguire replacements, I have triple Spurs, triple City and triple Newcastle already. I have no interest in Brighton or Man United defence and would need a lot of convincing to get Cucurella. So, I think I am buying a second Arsenal defender… Probably White over Saliba because money isn’t an issue.

If B. Fernandes is actually injured then I have a similar problem with a similar solution… Saka or Havertz are top of my list. If I wasn’t tripled up on Spurs already I would have just got Richarlison but that’s not possible without a hit and its probably not worth it.

That’s it!
